Colombia: Growth in Transmission Network [free access]

April 10, 2017

As of October 2016, the country had 25,015 km of line length at the 110 kV to 500 kV levels. Colombia’s power network is integrated with those of Ecuador and Venezuela. During 2011-16, the country’s line length network rose at a nominal CAGR of about 0.51 per cent and MVA capacity grew by 1.77 per cent. .

Colombia’s Sistema Interconectado Nacional (SIN) or National Interconnected System is composed of three types of networks—local distribution system (comprising lines operating at voltages below 220 kV with coverage at the municipal, district or local level), regional transmission network (comprising lines operating at voltages below 220 kV and above 100 kV, which are not part of the local distribution network) and Sistema de Transmisión Nacional (STN) or National Transmission System (composed of lines operating at voltages equal to or greater than 220 kV).

SIN serves more than 95 per cent of the population. Besides SIN, there are several isolated local systems in the Zonas No Interconectadas (ZNI) or Non-Interconnected Zones.

The STN is owned and operated by about 11 public/state utilities. The largest utility is Interconexión Eléctrica SA (ISA), in which the state owns a more than 61.5 per cent equity share. The company controls over 70 per cent of the electricity transmission network at the 220 kV and above levels and is the only company with national coverage.

The other key players in the transmission segment are Empresa de Energía de Bogotá S.A. E.S.P. (EEB), Empresa de Energía del Pacífico S.A. (EPSA), Empresas Públicas de Medellín E.S.P. (EPM), Centrales Eléctricas del Norte de Santander S.A. E.S.P. (CNES), Distasa S.A. E.S.P., and Electrificadora de Santander S.A. E.S.P (ESSA).
