Project Update

Birtle Transmission Project, Canada [free access]

April 7, 2020

Developer: Manitoba Hydro

Project details and status: The project has been proposed to increase interconnection capacity to western Canada’s power distribution grid to ensure greater energy supply stability and keep provincial energy rates stable.

Under the project, Manitoba Hydro will develop the 230 kV transmission line, which will extend 46 km northwest from the municipality of Prairie View to the Manitoba–Saskatchewan border. The line will allow up to 215 MW of hydropower to flow from the Manitoba hydropower grid to the SaskPower power grid.

In March 2020, the federal government of Canada and the government of Manitoba announced funding for the Birtle transmission line. The federal government is investing more than CAD18.7 million in the transmission project as part of its CAD26.9 billion investment commitment to green infrastructure projects, while the government of Manitoba will contribute CAD42 million.

The project construction works are scheduled to start by end-2020.
