Barrie Area Transmission Upgrade Project, Canada [free access]

May 14, 2020

Developer: Hydro One Networks Inc. (Hydro One), Ontario's largest electricity transmission and distribution company

Project details and status: Hydro One states that the proposed facilities are needed to accommodate load growth in the Barrie and Innisfil areas. The project will also replace end-of-life infrastructure at the transformer stations in Barrie and Essa.

Under the project, Hydro One will construct a new 230 kV connection point at the existing Essa transformer station (TS), including the addition of three new breakers, to connect the E28 and E29 circuits; upgrade two existing 115 kV circuits (E3B and E4B) of approximately 9 km between Essa TS and Barrie TS to 230 kV levels (the new circuit nomenclature will be E28 and E29); and upgrade and expand the existing Barrie TS yard with new 230/44 kV facilities, consisting of two new 75/125 MVA transformers and a new 44 kV switchyard.

In April 2020, the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) has granted leave to construct (LoC) for the project.
