Peru’s COES updates investment figure for 2021-30 transmission plan [free access]

October 21, 2020

Peru’s electricity grid operator, Comité de Operación Económica del Sistema Interconectado Nacional (COES), has increased the estimated investment under its 2021-30 transmission plan from USD1.32 billion to USD1.64 billion.

Of the latter, USD981 million is envisaged for 11 projects, construction works for which are planned to start during 2021-21 and complete by 2026. The remaining USD659 million is earmarked for 13 projects, for which construction will begin after 2021.

The new investment figure will now go to the energy and mining investment regulator Organismo Supervisor de la Inversión en Energía y Minería (OSINERGMIN) for review, with approval from the Ministerio de Energía y Minas (MEM) or the Ministry of Energy and Mines expected by the year-end.

A major project added is the 158-km-long, 220 kV Ica–Poroma Transmission Project, which is estimated to cost USD54 million.

The transmission plan is part of COES’s mandate under the Ley de Desarrollo Eficiente de la Generación Eléctrica, approved by Law N°28832, and in compliance with the provisions of the Reglamento de Transmisión, approved by Supreme Decree No. 027-2007-EM, which requires it to publish a transmission network plan every two years.
