Project Update

New England Transmission Infrastructure (NETI), Australia [free access]

August 11, 2020

Developer: TransGrid [New South Wales (NSW) transmission system operator (TSO)]

Project details and status: The transmission system is associated with the upcoming 8,000 MW New England renewable energy zone (REZ) in northern NSW. The project will enable the connection of an additional 1,400 MW of renewable energy (RE) generation capacity to the grid within the next three to five years.

The project is in the preliminary stage of development, where TransGrid is gearing up to undertake a feasibility study of the project. The study will develop, test and deliver a technical design and commercial process for the NETI project, which comprises the initial development phase for the new 330 kV, single-circuit Tamworth–Gunnedah line and a new substation east of Gunnedah. The study will also help manage RE integration into the grid.

Recently, in July 2020, the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA), on behalf of the Australian government, announced funding of AUD9.95 million to TransGrid to support the feasibility study. Besides ARENA, the NSW government has also provided AUD79 million for grid infrastructure to help establish the New England REZ around the Armadale area.

Also in July 2020, TransGrid invited expressions of interest (EoI) from RE developers for connection into a new REZ in New England, which will involve paying a service fee in return for guaranteed access to the new Tamworth–Gunnedah transmission line. The guaranteed access will help wind and solar farm owners in avoiding issues pertaining to grid bottlenecks.
