US AES energises 400 MWh battery storage facility in California [free access]

January 27, 2021

The US-based AES Corporation has recently energised a 100 MW/400 MWh Alamitos battery storage facility in Long Beach, California. The storage facility comprises five Advancion batteries and control systems supplied by Fluence—an energy storage technology and services company jointly owned by Siemens and AES.

Construction of the facility commenced in June 2019. The battery storage is located at the Alamitos Energy Center (AEC)—AES's natural gas-fired, combined cycle power plant—which is currently under construction to replace the ageing AES Alamitos generating station.

The storage facility, one of the largest operating battery storage projects in the world, is underpinned by a 20-year contract with Southern California Edison Company as part of the Edison International utility subsidiary's efforts to bolster grid reliability in the region.

AES has a permit to expand the Alamitos energy storage project to 300 MW, though the company has not yet committed to an expansion.
