Project Update

720 MW New England Solar Farm, Australia [free access]

April 5, 2021

Developer: UPC\AC Australia, a joint venture (JV) between UPC Renewables and AC Energy

Project details and status: The hybrid project will entail the combination of both solar power and energy storage, to benefit the grid as a whole.

The two-stage project comprises a 720 MW solar farm that will be coupled with a 400 MWh battery energy storage system (BESS). It will be located near Uralla in the New England region of New South Wales.

The project will comprise more than 2.4 million solar panels, 150 power conversion units, and a lithium-ion battery storage facility. It will be connected to TransGrid’s existing 330 kV transmission line, which crosses the 3,362-hectare development site. The first stage will also include 50 MWh of integrated battery storage and a 330/33 kV substation.

As of March 2021, construction work has been initiated by UPC\AC. The Spain-based infrastructure, energy and telecommunications company Elecnor has been awarded the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the first stage of the project, which is expected to be completed by 2023.

Once fully complete, the solar farm and battery project will be Australia’s largest hybrid solar and battery energy storage facility, and will play an important role in the country’s renewable energy transition.
