Victoria–NSW link upgrade gets regulatory approval in Australia [free access]

April 26, 2021

The New South Wales (NSW) transmission system operator (TSO), TransGrid, has been given a go-ahead by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), for funding of AUD45 million for the Victoria─NSW Interconnector (VNI) Minor project. The project involves upgradation work on the existing interconnection between the two states.

The Australian Energy Market Operator’s (AEMO) 2020 Integrated System Plan (ISP) identified VNI Minor as a project required to address cost, security and reliability issues in the National Energy Market.

The project will allow for an additional 170 MW to flow from Victoria to NSW, providing a critical contingency arrangement during periods of peak demand using innovate non-network technology. The TSO will be installing smart wires with power flow technology, which enables real-time control of electricity flows along power lines.
