Fluence commissions 20 MW/20 MWh BESS in Philippines [free access]

June 9, 2021

Fluence, the energy storage specialist formed by Siemens AG and AES Corporation, has recently commissioned two, 20 MW/20 MWh battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Kabankalan and Davao in the Philippines. The aforementioned systems are the first two out of the 13―470 MW  energy storage projects awarded to the firm in the Philippines.

Fluence has been contracted to supply and maintain the portfolio by Philippine power company SMC Global Power Holdings Corp (SMCGPH). The 13 sites of the portfolio will provide grid stability services across the country, preparing the power network for higher levels of renewables. The remaining projects, ranging from 20 MW to 60 MW, are expected to be rolled out by July 2022.

SMC Global is spending over USD1 billion to simultaneously build 31 new BESSs nationwide, with a rated capacity of 1,000 MW. These BESSs are a part of the firm’s plans to improve power quality throughout the grid system and facilitate integration of renewable power sources into the country’s generation portfolio.
