Project Update

Ring Power Transmission System, Turkmenistan [free access]

July 6, 2021

Developer: State-owned grid developer, Turkmenenergo of Turkmenistan

Project details and status: The project will create a transmission infrastructure ring comprising 1,000 km of line length and two 500 kV and two 220 kV substations in the country. It is aimed at increasing the production of electricity, improving the quality of energy saving and significantly increasing the electricity export potential. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) is funding the project.

In June 2021, Turkmenergo laid the foundation for the first section (450 km) of the project.  About 500 metal supports for the first section of the transmission project have been installed, while further work on the installation of 1,426 supports and construction of the 220 kV Serdar, 110 kV Gyzylarbat and 500 kV Balkan substations will be completed by August.

The Turkey-based company Çalık Enerji is responsible for installing the telemechanics, communications, and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems for the high voltage (HV) power lines and substations. The company is also working on the construction of reinforced concrete foundations for the Ahal–Balkan and Balkan–Dashoguz power lines, along with the construction of the 220 kV Serdar substation.

The completion of the ring energy system is scheduled for 2023.
