India plans to set up 4,000 MWh grid-scale battery storage system [free access]

July 16, 2021

The Indian government is moving towards a greener grid, and plans on setting up around 4,000 MWh of grid-scale battery energy storage systems (BESSs) at regional load dispatch centres (RLDCs). According to the power ministry, the energy storage systems will act as an instant intervention mechanism, whenever there is any stark fluctuation because of renewables.

The industry is also moving forward with its energy storage plans. Reliance Industries recently announced its plans to set up an advanced energy storage factory. Government-owned electric utility company NTPC Limited has also floated a global tender inviting Expressions of Interest (EOI) for setting up a 1,000 MWh grid-scale BESS.
