Grid assets of Beatrice offshore wind farm off Scotland to be sold [free access]

August 2, 2021

Scotland’s Beatrice Offshore Wind Farm Limited has signed an agreement with the UK’s Transmission Capital Partners to sell its offshore transmission assets—valued at GBP438 million—of the 588 MW Beatrice offshore wind farm. The UK-based law firm Herbert Smith Freehills advised Transmission Capital Partners, a consortium comprising International Public Partnerships, Amber Infrastructure Group, and Transmission Investment, on the deal.

The sale agreement follows the selection in December 2019 by energy regulator Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (Ofgem) of Transmission Capital Partners as the preferred bidder for the offshore transmission licence for Beatrice as part of a competitive tender process.

Both companies have also signed an operation and maintenance (O&M) agreement as per which Beatrice will provide logistics and reactive services support to Transmission Capital Partners. Reportedly, the green electricity from the project will be sufficient to serve approximately 450,000 homes across the UK.

The wind farm is located off the Caithness coastline, and is Scotland’s largest operational offshore wind farm. It comprises 84 Siemens Gamesa 7 MW wind turbine generators connected to two offshore substation platforms located within the boundaries of the wind farm. Transmission assets include two offshore transformer modules, one onshore substation at Blackhillock, and the related export cables.
