Vietnam receives US grant for pilot BESS project [free access]

October 22, 2021

Vietnam received a grant of USD2.96 million from the US Consulate General for developing the first grid-scale battery energy storage system (BESS) in the country. The BESS will be retrofitted to a utility-scale solar PV power plant in Vietnam in a pilot project aimed at supporting the spread of renewable energy in the country while reducing power losses.

The 15 MW/7.5 MWh BESS will be integrated at a 50 MWp solar farm in Khanh Hoa Province in Vietnam. An alliance between Vietnamese renewables company AMI Renewables and Philippines-based power plant developer AC Energy will construct the solar farm and BESS.

The BESS will be deployed with cutting-edge US energy storage technology to further the renewable goals of the nation.

The pilot will offer Vietnam with an opportunity to demonstrate the commercial viability of BESS technology for renewable energy production, reduce the impacts of curtailment during periods of surplus renewable energy, and demonstrate how stored energy can be integrated into the Vietnamese grid.
