South Australia grants approval for 225 MW/450 MWh BESS project [free access]

November 1, 2021

South Australian state government has granted development approval for Australian renewable energy developer Maoneng Group’s AUD112.5 million battery energy storage system (BESS) project. The developer had started the notification period for the BESS by submitting its application with the state government’s State Commission Assessment Panel (SCAP) in June 2021.

The project will entail the construction of a 225 MW/450 MWh BESS on a 30-hectare site at Gould Creek, about 20 km north of Adelaide’s city centre. It will be connected to the high-voltage 275 kV transmission grid via South Australian transmission system operator (TSO) ElectraNet’s existing Para substation, which is located about 100 metres away from the proposed project site.

Once operational, the BESS will be able to power 40,000 homes. The construction is expected to begin late in 2022, with scheduled completion by end-2023.
