Broad Reach procures six BESS projects in Texas [free access]

April 20, 2022

Houston-based developer Broad Reach Power LLC announced the procurement of 900 MWh of battery energy storage systems (BESS) for six new standalone projects in Texas from Contemporary Amperex Technology (CATL), a Chinese battery manufacturer. The BESS systems will contribute to Electric Reliability Council of Texas’ (ERCOT) system reliability.

The six projects would be located in five Texas counties – Brazoria, Dickens, Hale, Houston and Pecos. The locations have been selected, and the necessary permits have been finalised. It will add to Broad Reach’s 21 GW portfolio of utility-scale wind, solar and energy storage power projects.

CATL will supply the lithium-ion battery systems for the projects. This is the second large transaction between the companies. In 2021, Broad Reach installed 200 MWh of CATL equipment in its Bat Cave and North Fork projects, both now operating in ERCOT.

The construction is expected to begin in the summer of 2022 and become operational in 2023.
