Germany’s Südkabel bags contract for Greenlink [free access]

May 13, 2022

German cable manufacturer Südkabel GmbH has secured a contract from Japanese technology provider, Sumitomo Electric, to supply, install and commission approximately 63 km of 320 kV high-voltage direct current (HVDC) onshore cabling for the Greenlink project, the interconnector between Ireland and the UK.

Greenlink is a 500 MW subsea and underground cable (UGC) electricity interconnector (with associated converter stations), allowing for electricity to flow both ways between the two countries. The approximately 205-km-long cable will connect the Pembroke converter station in South Wales (UK) and the Great Island converter station in County Wexford (Ireland). Of the total length, 7 km is onshore in Wales and 28 km in Ireland, with 170 km subsea.

In September 2021, the consortium of Siemens Energy and Sumitomo Electric signed a contract with Greenlink Interconnector Limited to deliver the HVDC converter system for the project. It achieved financial closure in March 2022 and is scheduled for commissioning in 2024.
