Italy’s Terna to expand Italy–Greece Interconnector [free access]

June 13, 2022

Italy’s transmission system operator (TSO) Terna plans to double the power exchange capacity of its existing interconnector with Greece from 500 MW to 1 GW, in order to integrate more renewables into its transmission network. The TSO would be investing EUR750 million for the same.

Construction on the new 500 MW undersea cable is expected to begin in 2023 and the line should be in service by 2030. Terna has included this 200-km line project in its 2021 Development Plan for the National Electricity Transmission Grid, in which it has pledged to invest a record EUR18.1 billion over the next 10 years to meet the demands of the energy transition and economic recovery.
