The Colombian mining and energy planning unit, Unidad de Planeación Minero Energética (UPME), under the Ministerio de Minas y Energía (MME) or Ministry of Mines and Energy, has awarded a contract for the construction and operation of power transmission infrastructure to Enlaza, a subsidiary of Colombia’s Grupo Energía de Bogotá (GEB), one of the leading energy-holding companies in Latin America. The aim of the project is to strengthen the Sistema Interconectado Nacional (SIN) or national interconnected system, and improve service reliability in the Sabana region, northern Bogotá.
The project entails the construction, operation and maintenance of the 230 kV Sopó substation and its associated transmission lines, located within the municipalities of Guasca, Sopó, and La Calera in the department of Cundinamarca.
GEB secured the project among four bidders, offering annual revenues of USD1.67 million. The project is a part of Colombia’s Reference Expansion Plan: Generation and Transmission 2022-36, which was prepared by UPME and adopted by MME to reinforce the grid and complement the 230 kV, 143-km , Chivor–Norte–Bacatá transmission works.
With this award GEB consolidates its position as the second largest transmission company in Colombia, with a 22 per cent share of the Sistema Nacional de Transmisión (STN) or national transmission system. The company currently operates 2,519 km of transmission lines and is constructing an additional 1,734 km of transmission lines.
