As per Brazilian energy regulator Agencia Nacional de Energia Eletrica (ANEEL), due to the breakdown of several of Piaui's state-owned transmission lines, northeastern Brazil was disconnected from the power grid, which affected about tens of millions of people on August 29, 2013.
