Project details and status: The project is aimed at strengthening electricity supply to a key mining region and supporting long-term load growth. It is a critical piece of infrastructure that will help power an important mining region in Canada and enable major new investments across the North while supporting 5,800 jobs and USD830 million in GDP.
The project involves the development of a 162-km, 230 kV double-circuit transmission line in northwestern Ontario, connecting Dryden, Ear Falls and Red Lake, along with associated substation infrastructure.
In October 2025, the Ministry of Energy and Mines initiated a consultation process seeking feedback on proposed measures to facilitate the timely development of the project. The consultation period remained open until December 2025.
In April 2026, the Government of Ontario issued an Order-in-Council (OIC) and a Minister’s Directive to the Ontario Energy Board, formally designating Hydro One as the transmitter for the project. A separate OIC declared the project as a priority under the Ontario Energy Board Act, 1998, thereby streamlining the regulatory approval process and reducing potential delays.
The project is currently in the development and consultation phase, with efforts focused on advancing approvals and stakeholder engagement. It is expected to be commissioned in the early 2030s.
